With their 6-5 win over the Angels on Tuesday night, the New York Yankees have clinched a playoff berth for the 2009 MLB post-season. The Yankees missed the playoffs in 2008 for the first time since 1994, when the post-season was canceled due to the player’s strike. The Yankees could have lost on Tuesday night and still clinched a playoff spot if the Texas Rangers lost their game to the Oakland A’s, which they wound up doing anyway. About 51 minutes prior to the Yankees winning their game the Rangers were defeated by the A’s by a score of 9-1.

The Rangers still have a shot at the playoffs but will have to overcome the Boston Red Sox in the American League Wild Card. The Yankees have clinched a spot in the playoffs but not the American League East just yet. Their magic number to clinch the East is at 5. So, any combination of Yankees wins and Red Sox losses that equals 5 will give the Yankees the East title. The Yankees are riding the curtails of two new free agent stars this year in left handed pitcher CC Sabathia and switch hitting first baseman Mark Teixeira.

Manager Joe Girardi is in his second year as manager of the Yankees and third year overall as a Major League manager. His first job was with the Florida Marlins in 2006. It has been speculated that Girardi could be let go after the post-season is complete if the Yankees are eliminated in the first round. So, even though the team has clinched a playoff spot Girardi’s job still isn’t safe.

Dexter, a television show on Showtime, is headed for a new season. The new season will begin September 27, 2009. Joining the cast of the show for season four is veteran actor John Lithgow. Lithgow gained celebrity fame as Doctor Dick Solomon on the NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow will play Walter Simmons, a character who is living a double life as America’s most prolific and deadly serial killers.

The show Dexter isn’t your normal television police/detective show. Why? The main character, Dexter Morgan, is a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. But what most people in the show don’t know is that Dexter is a covert serial killer on the side. The show is based on the novels written by Jeff Lindsay.

Each episode Dexter will track down a criminal that has been a detriment to society, capture them, and then torture them until they die. He will then dispose of the body in trash bags in bodies of water in the area. Dexter is not a show for the faint of heart or someone easily sickened by the sight of blood or other violent pictures. The amount of violence on the show is limited but once Dexter catches a criminal there will be one or two scenes involving nothing but violence.

Dexter typically targets criminals who are murderers, rapists, or other criminals that physically abuse other people or animals. Dexter is a highly addictive show because of the story lines present and what can be included in the show since it is on premium pay television.

The first true crime wave to hit the United States occurred in the 1930’s, in the midst of the Great Depression. It involved such criminal figures as John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. The FBI came to existence during this crime wave under the direction and leadership of J. Edgar Hoover. The agent assigned to hunting down and either capturing or killing Dillinger is Melvin Purvis.

The movie “Public Enemies” was released in early July and has been a hit ever since. The movie is based on the non-fiction book written by Bryan Burroughs titled Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34.

If you are interested in the crime wave that took Americans hostage and killed hundreds of police officers and FBI agents across the country then this movie is for you. The movie has plenty of action scenes including car chases, gun fights, bank robberies, jailbreaks and stakeouts.

The movie features Johnny Depp as Dillinger, Christian Bale as Purvis, Channing Tatum as Floyd, Billy Crudup as Hoover and Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend Billie Frechette. The movie is directed by Michael Mann and produced by Mann and Kevin Misher. The movie has become so popular that it has already amassed over $114 million dollars in revenue after taking $80 million to make the movie.

There are a couple of historical inaccuracies in the movie including the following:

Dillinger died before Nelson and Floyd.

Purvis did not shoot Floyd but he did order his execution after he had been wounded.

Purvis did not shoot Nelson nor was he present when he was killed.

An arrest has been made in the slaying of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair. McNair was murdered on July 4th in his apartment by his mistress Sahel Kazemi, who then turned the gun on herself, committing suicide. The person arrested in connection with the killing is Adrian J. Gilliam Jr., of LaVergne, Tennessee. Gilliam is charged with being a convicted felon in the possession of a firearm. If he is convicted he could face up to 10 years in prison along with a fine of up to $250,000.

Gilliam told officials that he sold the gun used in the McNair slaying to the woman who pulled the trigger, McNair’s mistress. Gilliam was charged and convicted of second degree murder and attempted armed robbery in 1993 in the state of Florida. Gilliam identified the woman via a photo provided by law enforcement officials who arrested him.

“No one denies this is a tragedy,” Gilliam’s public defender Hugh Mundy said. “Steve McNair was one of Nashville’s heroes. A lot of lives have already been ruined. But Mr. Gilliam is a decent, hard-working family man and there’s no reason to ruin his life too.”

Gilliam supposedly sold the gun to Kazemi for $100 because his wife was afraid to have the gun inside their house. The sale took place outside the restaurant where Kazemi worked and where she first met McNair. The sale went down two days prior to the killing. McNair retired from the NFL last season. He made a name for himself while playing for the Tennessee Titans, leading them to an appearance in the Super Bowl against the Saint Louis Rams.

Is it just me or does it seems like a lot of young famous people have died recently. It really puts things in perspective as I watch my parents age. Everyone obviously has heard that the late great Michael Jackson finally lost his battle with drug addiction. Arguably the largest pop star ever left behind three children. Steve “Air” McNair was brutally murdered in his sleep by a jealous 20 year old mistress who later committed suicide. It makes me wonder what promises were broken in that situation.

However, I think the most disturbing and tragic death on them all was Billy Mays. Billy Mays was a “Pitchman” who traveled for 20 years hitting home shows and selling product. He became famous with products like Oxi-Clean, but recently made it big time with his new reality show “Pitchmen.” Pitchmen followed Billy and his partner Anthony Sullivan around while they met inventors and made their dreams come true. For everyone who thought he was just an annoying voice on infomercials, the show proved to show the real character of Billy Mays.

He died unexpectedly in his sleep from heart failure. There was speculation that an earlier airplane accident caused head trauma, but the autopsy ruled that out. Billy was a genuine guy who left a grown son and baby daughter behind. These deaths should be a reminder that even great people can perish and that every day is important, so cherish it.

I came across a recent dilemma as I tried to buy some trophies for our softball championship. We recently won our league and it was my duty as league manager to buy the trophies. My first instinct was to stop by the local manufacturer of baseball trophies that I had come to know over my years of youth baseball. I was taken back at the high cost of the low production.

I remembered seeing an ad for corporate plaques and corporate awards and decided to see what they offered. I knew that I could save money by ordering a large lot but local companies only produce local needs. As a result, I found an online trophy store that had so much volume and inventory that I saved a lot of money while giving our team a great reward.

It is always best to compare local prices with online and give the businesses the option of competing.

Building a house always entails the finishing touches. Finishing touches can range from plants to kitchen appliances. The most important thing to consider is the materials in which the finishing products are made of. Exterior fixtures should always have protective finishes as regular steel will rust very quickly. Most products declare exterior/interior use on their packaging.

First of all, you have a choice to make with mailboxes. You can buy a cheap steel painted mailbox that is sure to rust once the protected coating is dented. The second option is a plastic mailbox that will last a while but can look rather cheap. I suggest looking into a blomus stainless steel mailbox for the ultimate weather protection and style.

Another issue I came across was my fireplace. I decided to use reclaimed wood for the mantle and stainless steel fireplace accessories to make the white paint stand out. Either way, I tend to use stainless steel hardware throughout my houses as I feel that it complements white trim the best.

I love technology so much and this is not a sarcastic statement at all. I mean it. I am not being sarcastic. I honestly am one of the few that has not been bitten by technology before. I understand that technology is never perfect but I have been lucky for quite some time now as I knock on wood. Computers can be a man’s best friend, especially when it comes to blogging.

Computers are an important part of the technological world and they can be found almost every you look nowadays. They help medical personnel care for patients, police officers keep the public safe, teachers instruct students, students learn a lesson and so on and so forth. Computers have been an integral part of my life and will continue to be for as long as I keep on blogging.

They are perfect for writing, watching movies, listening to music, catching up with friends, checking the weather or traffic, keeping up to date with your favorite sports team and reading the news. Computers make people smarter with each passing minute they are used because technology is always changing and is challenging at the same time.

Being able to use a computer makes life a whole lot easier for everyone these days. Computers are an integral part of the grade school, high school, and college levels of education as well as the work place once we complete school. Almost every job these days uses a computer for some aspect of the job so it is imperative for people to learn how to use them when they are young.

The Stanley Cup Finals are in full swing, with the ‘Detroit Red Wings leading the Pittsburgh Penguins three games to two in the best of seven series. The Stanley Cup Finals this year are an exact replica of last year’s matchup between the Red Wings and the Penguins as both teams have won their respective conferences for two years in a row now. The Penguins boast possibly the most dangerous one-two punch in the history of hockey with team captain Sideny Crosby and teammate Evgeni Malkin but they still trail the Red Wings by one game in the series.

The Red Wings plastered the Penguins on Saturday night by a score of 5-0 in Detroit but the series moves back to Pittsburgh for game six on Tuesday night. Each team has won all of its home games so far in the Stanley Cup Finals. Detroit as won all three of their games in Detroit while Pittsburgh won their two games in the Steel City. The Penguins and their fans are hoping that the home ice trend will continue in game six so the Penguins can live to see another day.

The Red Wings are receiving a long rest following their game five win. The team is riddled with injuries and exhaustion but has two full days off before facing Pittsburgh in game six on Tuesday. Game six should be just as good as the first five games in this series as the Red Wings look to defeat the Penguins for the second year in a row and claim their fifth title in 12 years and their 12th overall.

I’m pretty sure I haven’t checked my MySpace account in over 2 months. I am already getting sick of Facebook. It is one thing to keep in touch with friends, but these sites give a little too much information. However, we are now starting to see some hybrid social networking websites that offer a lot more than generic communication. One site that stood out to me is called Acobay. Acobay allows users to connect with people based on cars they drive, pets they have, or even places they have visited.
I found their travel section for Bermuda really helpful when I was looking for feedback on a vacation I was planning. We should see quite a lot of traffic going to these sites as users are demanding more specific information and results. The bottom line is that if you plan on going somewhere, buying something, or need general feedback, you should check out their information.
